Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about European aerospace market entry and working with Westworld Consulting.
Working With Westworld
What does Westworld Consulting do?
We act as your European sales team for the aerospace and defence sector. We represent overseas manufacturers in Europe, approaching OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers on your behalf to develop sales opportunities, build relationships and pursue contracts. We provide the expertise, contacts, and local presence that you would otherwise need to build an in-house European team to achieve. See our full range of services.
How is Westworld different from a lead generation agency?
We are not a lead generation service or a telesales operation. Our team are former aerospace engineers from companies like Airbus and Rolls-Royce, with decades of industry experience. We engage at a technical level with procurement, engineering, and senior management at European OEMs. We build genuine relationships over time, not lead lists.
What types of companies do you represent?
We represent overseas aerospace and defence manufacturers ranging from SMEs specialising in niche components to large international organisations. Our clients typically have a strong product or capability and need expert help accessing the European market. We call our clients "principals."
How do you charge for your services?
We typically work on a retained basis with a monthly retainer fee and a commission on sales. This aligns our interests with yours and ensures consistent, dedicated effort on your behalf. The exact structure is tailored to each engagement depending on scope and complexity.
How long does it take to see results?
European aerospace procurement is qualification-led, and timelines reflect that. Some principals see qualified opportunities take shape relatively early; others spend longer on positioning before a programme moves. Timing depends on what you sell, current European demand and where each prime's programmes sit in their procurement cycle. We set realistic expectations from the outset and provide regular progress reporting throughout. Read more about how we work.
Do you work exclusively with one company per product area?
Yes. We do not represent directly competing products to the same customers. We work with one principal per discipline, so you have our undivided focus in your area. Where there is any possible adjacency, we discuss it openly during initial conversations to confirm there is no overlap.
How does the cost of using Westworld compare to hiring our own sales person in Europe?
Hiring a dedicated sales person in Europe means salary, benefits, travel, office costs, recruitment fees and management overhead, often running well into six figures per year before they have had a single meeting. There is no guarantee they will work out, and if they do not you face the cost and delay of starting again. Our retained model gives you immediate access to an experienced team with established industry contacts, at a fraction of that cost. You also benefit from our existing infrastructure, market knowledge and relationships from day one, rather than waiting months for a new recruit to build theirs.
Why do you charge a retainer rather than working on commission only?
European aerospace procurement is qualification-led and runs on relationships that take time to build. A commission-only model incentivises chasing quick wins rather than the sustained engagement that turns into real business. Our retainer ensures you receive dedicated, consistent effort: regular outreach, follow-up, reporting and relationship building, regardless of whether a deal closes this month. It aligns our focus with your long-term growth, not short-term transactions. The retainer also means we can invest time in the research, preparation and strategic work that makes outreach effective, rather than spreading ourselves too thin across too many clients.
European Market Entry
Why should we expand into the European aerospace market?
Europe is the world's second-largest aerospace and defence market after North America. It is home to major OEMs including Airbus, Rolls-Royce, Safran, BAE Systems, Leonardo, and Thales, along with an extensive supply chain. European defence spending is also at its highest level in decades, creating new opportunities across the sector. See our aerospace and defence sector pages for more detail.
What are the main challenges of selling in Europe?
European aerospace procurement is relationship-driven and qualification-led. Buyers prefer suppliers represented by people they know and trust. The market spans multiple countries with different languages, cultures, and regulations. Setting up your own European office is expensive and carries significant recruitment risk. A local representative helps you overcome all of these challenges at a fraction of the cost.
Do we need a European representative, or can we sell directly from the US?
You can try, but most overseas suppliers find it very difficult to gain traction without local presence. European OEMs expect regular face-to-face contact, availability in European time zones, and representatives who understand local business practices. Opportunities slip away without someone on the ground. Our sales representation service solves this.
Which European countries do you cover?
We cover all major European aerospace and defence markets including the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Netherlands, Switzerland, Norway, Austria, Turkey, and others. Our coverage can be tailored to focus on the countries most relevant to your products. See our European coverage page for the full picture.
Do we need to worry about ITAR and export controls?
If your products are subject to ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) or EAR (Export Administration Regulations), export control compliance needs to be considered early in any European engagement. Our team is experienced in working with ITAR-controlled products and can advise on practical approaches to managing export requirements. We also work closely with MK Trade Compliance Group, a leading export compliance practitioner.
How We Work
How do you report progress?
We provide regular updates on pipeline status, meeting outcomes, and next actions for every opportunity. We use a secure CRM platform to manage your sales pipeline, giving you visibility and accountability at every stage. Reporting frequency is agreed at the start of each engagement.
Will we be involved in meetings with European customers?
Yes. We represent you professionally while keeping you informed and involved in key decisions. For important meetings, we coordinate your participation, whether in person or remotely. Our role is to open doors and build momentum, not to operate independently of your team.
Do you attend trade shows on our behalf?
Yes. We help you plan, prepare, and attend European trade shows including Farnborough, Paris Air Show, ILA Berlin, Eurosatory, DSEI, and many others. We arrange meetings with key contacts ahead of the event and provide on-the-ground support throughout. See our trade show support services.
How many companies do you represent at one time?
We deliberately limit our principal roster to ensure every client receives dedicated attention. We never represent competing products to the same customers, which means we develop genuine depth in each discipline we cover. The exact number varies, but we keep it small enough that every principal gets the time and focus they need.
How do we get started?
Contact us for an initial conversation. We will discuss your products, your European ambitions, and whether there is a good fit. There is no obligation and no hard sell. If we believe we can add value, we will propose a scope of work tailored to your needs.
